Switchgrass Seed

Switchgrass seed is planted for many purposes
some of which are for forage, bio-fuels, erosion control and as an ornamental grass. Switchgrass is a native, perennial warm season grass indigenous to the Central and North American tall-grass prairie into Canada. This native grass species is eco-friendly for many reasons two of which are the need for agricultural chemicals to grow switchgrass is low to non-existent, switchgrass captures and stores carbon dioxide (greenhouse gases) by enhanced soil carbon trapping.

Switchgrass is a warm season perennial grass planted for pasture and wildlife forage. For forage it needs to be grazed prior to emergence of developed seed stalks. Forage quality is high in early stage. As it matures animals are reluctant to graze on this grass making it unacceptable as a forage. Graze early even when cool season grasses still have sufficient forage. This grass is an early producing warm season grass and grows fairly tall when mature.

Planting Rate For Switchgrass:

10 lbs. PLS / per acre - conventional planting.
8 lbs PLS / per acre - drilled.

Please see Virginia Extension for information on managing Switchgrass as a forage crop and handling seed dormancy issues which are a characteristic of switchgrass seed.

Switchgrass Facts

Switchgrass has been called the grass of the future for it's versatility and environmental advantages.  A native grass to North America, Switchgrass is used as a forage grass for livestock, makes a beautiful ornamental grass, performs well for erosion control and is being developed for use as a bio-fuel to name just a few of the uses for Switchgrass. All of these uses for Switchgrass are relative to it's growth stages, i.e. when used as a forage it should be grazed before flowering. There are several varieties of this warm season grass which we discuss below.

Features and Uses For Switchgrass

  • Ornamental Native Grass
  • Pasture Grass for Livestock Forage
  • Bio-fuel - Switchgrass can be used to produce Ethanol to replace fossil fuels
  • Erosion Control
  • Eco-friendly - Switchgrass requires little if any chemical Fertilization
  • Switchgrass captures carbon dioxide (greenhouse gases) naturally

Areas Of Adaptation For SwitchgrassUSA Map of Where Switchgrass Grows

Switchgrass is adapted to most of the USA and parts of Canada as shown in the USDA map here to the right. Switchgrass varieties can be divided into two types, lowland (southern) and upland (northern). Lowland varieties of Switchgrass perform well in areas where there is a longer growing season with warmer temperatures such as the Southern USA. Upland Switchgrass varieties are more cold tolerant and thus have higher winter survivability making them well suited for the Northern USA.

Soil, Climate and Fertility Requirements for Switchgrass

Switchgrass grows well in fine to coarse textured soils, and in regions where annual precipitation falls between 15 and 30 inches or more per year. Switchgrass is an immense biomass producer, and can reach heights of 10 feet or more in wetter areas of the country. The differences in switchgrass varieties are related to local soil and climatic characteristics, with eastern and southern varieties adapted to higher moisture conditions, and western and northern varieties adapted to drier conditions. Switchgrass generally will grow with little or no fertilization, but if you are using it as a large production crop you need to test your soil for pH, phosphorous and potassium levels.

Establishment of Switchgrass

Planting Rates will vary according to variety and the intended use for your Switchgrass.  Please see individual products for more information.

Planting Rates:

  • Planting With Wildflowers = 2 lbs./acre.
  • Planting alone = 8-10 lbs./acre.
  • For Biomass uses = with a density of greater than 2 plants per Sq. Ft. plant 8 -10 lbs. per acre.
  • Planting Depth = 1/4 to 1/2 inch - No Deeper
  • Type = Warm Season Perennial
  • Botanical Name = Pancium virgatum
  • Areas of Adaptation - Switchgrass is found and grows in all of the USA except the Pacific Northwest and California.
