Strawberry Clover Seed

Strawberry CloverStrawberry Clover Seed (Trifolium Fragiferum) - Strawberry clover is perennial clover that is similar to White Dutch Clover in growth habit and like White Dutch Clover, can be used as a lawn grass alternative. It reaches a height of 8" -14" and produces blooms that are a light pink in color. Strawberry clover is generally used in mixtures with grass and wildflowers to produce an alternative lawn for large areas. It can be planted solo for smaller lawn areas.

Strawberry Clover, as are all clovers, is a legume which are soil nitrogen fixers so there is no need to use expensive and harmful chemical nitrogen fertilizers. In order to insure good nitrogen fixation by the clover (legume), it is necessary to inoculate the legume with the proper strains of the bacteria prior to planting the legume seeds.

Strawberry Clover spreads by above ground stolons, similar to strawberries. Adapted to wet saline and alkaline soils in the western U.S., Strawberry Clover will also tolerate flooding and is the most saline (salt) tolerant clover available. It has, in the past, been used as principally a pasture plant that is somewhat drought resistant. Strawberry clover develops a good sod, and is very palatable for grazing animals. It has also been used as groundcover in orchards and vineyards and for green manure cover crop applications. Forage and seeds of strawberry clover are also used by big and small game and upland birds.

Planting Strawberry Clover

Strawberry Clover Seed are used to plant alternative lawns, for live stock grazing, hay and as decorative flowers in flower gardens and meadows. It has also been used as groundcover in orchards and vineyards and for green manure cover crop applications. Forage and seeds of strawberry clover are also used by big and small game and upland birds.

Adaptation of Strawberry Clover

Strawberry clover is noted for its ability to establish and persist on wet saline and alkaline soils and is adapted to wet meadows, streams and seeps. It is the most saline tolerant clover commercially available. Strawberry clover withstands flooding because the stolons have a tropic response that causes the tips to be elevated above the water level.

Soils - It is adapted to a wide range of soil textures from loam to clay and tolerates soil pH of 5.3-8.2.
Flood & Salt Tolerant
- It is tolerant of flooding for up to 2 months, salinity (up to 3 percent concentration). short-term drought.
Climate - Will handle short term droughts. It needs at least 25 inches of annual precipitation to thrive but can withstand mean annual precipitation as low as 17 inches and can tolerate mean annual temperatures of 40-50F. Strawberry clover is more hardy and tolerant of harsh environmental conditions than white clover.

Planting Strawberry Clover

Seeding Rate - 6 to 8 lbs per acre; If used as a component of a seeding mix, adjust to percent of mix desired. For grazing situations, strawberry clover should be limited to 1 pound PLS per acre or 25 percent of the total seed mix.
Inoculation - Strawberry Clover requires an inoculant to fix soil nitrogen - the correct inoculant variety is Rhizobia leguminosarum trifolii
Planting Methods - A weed free and firm seed bed or area is required with a planting depth of 1/8" - 1/4".  Seeds should be covered lightly with soil. Seed may be drilled or broadcast
When to Plant - Plant in Spring when the chance of frost is over. Late summer planting can be successful if there is adequate moisture (may require irrigation) and time for seedlings to establish before cold temperatures. You may plant in the late fall -- Dormant Planting -- with the expectation of seedlings emerging in the Spring after winter is over.
