Planting & Growing Imperial Tall Tine Tuber Turnips

Tall Tine Tubers™ Turnips are designed to establish and grow quickly, produce lots of tonnage, and attract and hold deer during the fall and winter as a result of the Institute’s goal-oriented approach to new product development. Tall Tine Tubers are designed to be planted in late summer or fall.

1. Tall Tine Tubers should be planted in medium to well-drained soil.

2. For best results, plow first and then disk the plot to eliminate existing weeds and grasses. This is the preferred and safest way to eliminate unwanted weeds and grass. Alternatively If you are only disking, a grass control herbicide such as Round Up™ or other glyphosate-type product can be sprayed before disking to kill existing weeds and grasses. This will not prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating but may make disking more effective and improve the seed bed. Beware that If herbicide is used, you must follow the recommended waiting time before seeding as stated on herbicide label.  Using herbicides with glysophate can cause crop failure and has been shown to have detrimental effects on the environment (causing super weeds), soils, animals, and humans.

3. Perform a soil test to determine lime and fertilizer needs of the plot. Tall Tine Tubers needs a soil pH of 6.0 to 7.0 to achieve optimal performance. If no soil test is available, apply a minimum of 2 tons of lime and 400 pounds of 20-20-20 or equivalent fertilizer per acre. If soil test is taken before ground breaking, make sure sample is taken at least 6 inches deep.
NOTE: Lime takes time to neutralize soil. Apply lime as far in advance of planting as possible. If lime is applied at planting, lightly disk the lime in to maximize contact with the soil. Fertilizer should be applied just prior to planting and, if possible, lightly disked in.

4. Smooth and firm the plot with a cultipacker or heavy roller. If no cultipacker is available, use a weighted drag implement. (See 5, and 6, and for details.)

5. When using a cultipacker or heavy roller:
a. After culitpacking or rolling as stated in step 4, broadcast seed at a rate of 6 pounds per acre.
b. Go back over the plot with cultipacker or roller to press the seed against the surface of the plot.

6. When using a weighted drag:
a. After dragging as stated in step 4, broadcast seed at a rate of 6 pounds per acre.
NOTE: With either the cultipacker or drag application, seed must never be planted more than ¼ inch deep.

7. Optional: After planting, place a small wire basket over a portion of your Tall Tine Tubers so wildlife cannot browse that small patch. Watch the difference inside and outside the basket to gauge plot usage.
