Buffalo Grass Seed For Pasture
Buchloe dactyloides

Buffalo Grass In BloomBuffalo Grass Seed produces an excellent forage grass for pastures. Its hardiness under adverse conditions makes buffalo grass desirable as a long-lived pasture grass. Buffalograss withstands heavy grazing better than any other native grass used in pastures and is often planted as a pure stand. Because of its excellent ground cover, ability to spread under use, wide climatic adaptation, and relative ease of establishment, Buffalograss is ideally suited for erosion control on range and pasturelands. Buffalo Grass is also an economical choice for low maintenance lawns, roadsides, erosion control areas, and environmental reclamation areas etc.

Texoka Buffalo Grass seed is treated for faster germination and is well adapted for planting in most of North America. Texoka is a variety derived from 10 selections of Buffalograss.
As the variety name indicates the parents from this variety were selected from Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas buffalo grass populations. Texoka buffalo grass grows from 8 to 10 inches in height.

Buffalo Grass Seed Facts

Buffalo Grass Seed produces an American native warm-season, sod-forming, short grass that makes an excellent forage pasture grass. It spreads by surface runners or stolons and reaches a height of 8 - 10 inches. It has been widely planted in the Great Plains area with very good results and is well adapted for most of the USA (see map below). Buffalo Grass provides good grazing for livestock. Its palatability, prevalence, and adaptation to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions make it an important forage species of the Great Plains.

Uses For Buffalo Grass

Buffalo Grass is used as a lawn grass, pasture grass, erosion control grass, for roadsides, low maintenance sites, parks, playgrounds, natural settings, hospitals, etc. Buffalo grass Seed can be used in a native type lawn or inter-seeded with wildflowers for a meadow look. Meadow plantings of this grass are beautiful with the bluish-gray coloring of the grass.

Areas of Adaptation For Buffalo Grass

Buffalo Grass Adaptation Map USABuffalo Grass seed is well adapted for planting in most of North America. Buffalo Grass is native to the Midwestern USA. As you can see in the map to the right here, buffalo grass adaptation has expanded in the USA. It is not suited for use in areas of high precipitation (25" per year or less), for shady areas or elevations above 5000'.

Buffalo Grass Seed Planting Info

Planting Rates: Lawns: 11/2 - 3 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft.
Large Acreage:
8 to 16 PLS lbs. per acre.
Planting Depth: 1/4" to 1/2"
Planting Date: Spring when soil temperatures reach at least 60°
Shade Tolerance: Moderate
Fertilization: Low fertilization requirements if any at all. Do not over fertilize as this will encourage the growth of weeds.
Recommended Mowing Height: Recommended 3 - 4" (or no mowing)
Soil Type: Recommended for loam to clay soils. Not advisable to plant in sandy soils.
Care & Maintenance: Keep soil moist until germination, once seedlings have emerged less watering is needed.
Germination: Texoka Buffalo Grass seed is pre-treated for faster germination. Buffalo Grass can be slow to germinate - especially un-treated seed and can be jump started by breaking seed dormancy. When necessary, this is usually done with a non-toxic application of potassium nitrate which can speed up the germination progress.
Successful establishments can even be achieved with only one seedling established per sq. ft. Be patient when growing this grass. Best planted on prepared soil for lawn or pasture grass.
