Empire Zoysia Grass Plugs
Empire Zoysia Grass Plugs are used to plant one of the most popular warm season grass species available. Empire zoysia grass plugs grow a lawn that is soft to the touch and feel with a
lush blue-green color and a fine, tight blade growth. A visually attractive grass that is even more attractive when the low cost maintenance requirements are taken into consideration. A
very environmentally friendly grass, Empire Zoysia grass is very drought tolerant, resistant to insects, tolerates heat, wear, is naturally weed resistant and has
excellent disease resistance. This makes for a "green" grass that requires fewer chemical inputs and less frequent mowing due to the horizontal growth pattern.
Durable enough for
professional use, too, Empire is a favorite of homeowners as well as golf courses, theme parks, master planned communities, office complexes, and more.
All of our grass plugs are sold as 36 @ 3"x 3" Plugs per order of 1. SAVE 10% on purchases of 10 or more of the same variety, on the same order! Please see

Areas Of Adaptation For Empire Zoysia Grass
Empire Zoysia Grass is a
superior performance warm season grass that will thrive in demanding tropical conditions -- yet also has exceptional cold hardiness surviving as far north as USDA Hardiness zone 6. We have provided an Empire Zoysia Adaptation Map here to the right. You may click on the image for a larger view -- image will open in a new window.
Soil, Climate And Fertility Requirements
Empire Zoysia Grass will grow in sand, sandy loam, clay or muck type soils. As for
Fertilization -- Perform a soil test to determine soil mineral composition.
When planting, use a starter fertilizer that is low in Nitrogen and higher in Phosphorous and
Potassium when you plant your Empire Grass Plugs. This starter fertilizer can be a organic compost or fertilizer or a lawn starter chemical fertilizer. Just place a small scoop
in each plug hole as you plant. Generally Empire Zoysia Grass may require 3 fertilizer applications per year --- spring, summer and fall -- 1lb of Nitrogen per 1000 square feet per
seasonal application. Be sure to not over fertilize with nitrogen as this will encourage weeds and diseases. You can expect Empire Zoysia Grass to retain fall color longer than many other turf selections and to green-up more quickly in the spring. Empire is a durable and versatile turf variety, but as with the selection of any turf grass, you should understand your own unique local growing conditions prior to purchasing and installing Empire Zoysia Grass Plugs or any type of grass.
Zoysia grass is generally disease resistant and will run weeds (and other grass) out of it's growing area once established.
Proper watering, mowing and
not over fertilizing will keep Zoysia grass healthy. Be responsible and do not use chemicals on your grass without the need -- this includes
fertilizers, herbicides and fungicides. Read this PDF document about
Empire Zoysia Grass Care.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Empire Zoysia may experience winter damage planted in areas where colder winter temperatures occur (10 degrees or
less). States and areas located north of Southern Oklahoma, Southern Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey may experience damage - We do NOT recommend
this variety (Empire) for these northern state areas as damage can include death of the plugs due to colder temperatures.
