Chicory Seed For Forage And Pasture

Chicory Seed produces is a grazing forage crop that is suitable for all types of livestock, horses and wildlife. It is an ideal option of providing high quality forage during the summer when cool season pasture production cannot provide the quality or quantity to maintain high levels of animal performance and gain. Chicory is ideally managed in a mix with clovers as the legumes fix nitrogen, add to the nutritive value, and provide ground cover during the winter when the chicory is dormant. Clovers are often a better companion species than grasses as they have a similar growth habit and grazing management requirements to chicory.
  • Yields from early spring through late fall
  • Perennial Herb for well drained sites with 3-5 year life
  • Reliable summer forage for dry conditions
  • Used for sheep, horses, cattle, and deer
  • Turkeys and Quail also are known to feed on Chicory

How To Grow Chicory From Seed

Chicory can grow well on a wide range of soil types, including sandy soil, and silt loams. It will grow best on high fertility soils with moderate to good drainage. Heavy clay soils will reduce persistence of many chicory varieties.

When to Plant Chicory Seed

Plant around mid-spring to take advantage of the warming conditions during establishment. Chicory can also be sown effectively in the late summer / early fall ...approximately six weeks before the first frost occurs. Chicory should be sown into a fully cultivated seed bed in pasture areas after the pasture has been killed with a herbicide. Care should be take to plant at correct depth (3/8 to 1/2 inch) to ensure good germination.

Seeding Rate

For a dominate Chicory pasture, sow Chicory at 6-8 lbs./ acre with 5 lbs. of red and 3 lbs. of a white clover. In a grass-clover mix, Chicory should be sown at 1-2 lbs. per acre in the spring or 2-3 lbs. per acre in the fall.

Maintenance - Fertilization & Grazing

It is recommended that you perform a soil test before adding fertilizer or organic amendments to the soil to determine the need and soil pH. Chicory grows best when soil ph is within 5.0 to 6.0. Chicory responds well to nitrogen. Apply N /35 lbs acre at planting if needed -- but reduce this amount accordingly when planting with legumes.

Chicory requires a high level of fertility for maximum production. It is also very responsive to N fertilization. If chicory is grown without a legume, apply 100 to 150 pounds N per acre in split applications of 50 pounds per acre in early spring when the chicory becomes green and 50 pounds per acre in early summer and in early fall.

Chicory yield responses to N fertilizer rates up to 200 pounds N per acre have been reported. However, as N rate increases so does stem growth. Therefore, the yield increase from N fertilization must be weighed against the ability to keep chicory grazed so that stems do not bolt. If chicory is planted with alfalfa or another legume, restrict annual N applications to limit the effect N has on reducing nitrogen fixation of the legume.

Chicory should be rotationally grazed to prolong stand life. Graze when 6-8 inches tall down to 2-3 then allow re-growth. If managed properly a stand with good soil fertility should last 3-5 years.
