Partridge Pea Facts - Planting & Adaptation

Partridge Pea Seed are are well suited to most any type soil and tolerant of acidic soil conditions which make it perfect for wildlife food plots and habitats. This warm season reseeding native annual legume will produce abundant yellow flowers late in the summer and small black seeds that are excellent feed for quail, mallard, prairie chicken, pheasant and deer (eat the foliage also). Partridge pea seeds are high in phosphorus content and protein value, and low in crude fiber and lignin making digestibility generally high. The seeds are hard and will stay in the soil or on the ground all winter as feed. They will consistently reseed each year and thicken year after year. Partridge pea often grows in dense stands, producing litter and plant stalks that furnish cover for upland game birds, small mammals, small non-game birds, and waterfowl.

Please note that the Partridge Pea foliage, while nutritious to deer, is poisonous to livestock.

The rather leafy 20 to 30 inch high Partridge Pea is an important plant for honey production and is home to the eggs of the Sulphur Butterfly.

Partridge peas have uses beyond that of wildlife food plots. The showy Partridge Pea will stabilize soil for erosion control and can be used as ornamental flowers or in native wildflower gardens. Partridge Peas also play an important role in honey production usually found on lands with no other source of nectar.

Planting Partridge Pea Seed

  • Date: March to May (extended planting dates in Northern USA)
  • Rate: 10-15 lbs. per acre in 36 inch rows, or lb. per 1000 sq. ft. ; 15 LB./acre if broadcasting and lightly disk or culti-pack.
  • Depth: "
  • Inoculant: Partridge peas are a legume which normally require an inoculant to stimulate their nitrogen fixing capabilities.
  • Fertilization: Soil test should be performed. Normally, being a legume that fixes nitrogen partridge pea only needs an application of phosphorous applied in the spring each year.
  • Can be planted with annual lespedezas

Adaptation of Partridge PeasPartridge Pea adaptation Map

Partridge Pea grows wild throughout the Midwest, eastern, and southern United States in zones 3 to 9. It is usually found in disturbed areas. Partridge pea grows on prairies, bluffs, riverbanks and river bottoms, as well as upland woods of the Great Plains. Partridge pea is common on sandy savannahs of the lower Gulf Coastal Plain. Partridge pea is most common on sandy to sandy loam soils. It grows best in full sunlight but will survive under shady conditions. Partridge pea has low water requirements and will grow and produce seed under stressed conditions. The lower pH limit of showy partridge pea is 5.0.
