Planting Kale Seed For Food Plots & Livestock Forage

Planting Dates: August - October - Kale grows well as a fall/winter forage in southern states. In some Northern states it can be used as a summer, fall, and winter forage. Kale grows best in cooler weather with cold days and nights which will sweeten the leaves especially if subjected to a fall frost. The leaves will become bitter and tough if grown in warmer weather. Optimum soil temperatures for growing kale are 60°-65°.

When planting any crop, it is important to understand that the fertility, type of soil and other environmental factors will vary according to your location. The planting information provided here is generalized and you should adjust planting rates, times and so forth for your location. Desired plant density should be considered to help determine your planting rate. If in doubt check with your Agricultural Extension Office.

Planting Kale Seed For Deer Food Plots

Planting Rate: The recommended planting rate is 10 pounds per acre for food plots. Remember that Kale grows large leaves and may over shade other plants in your food plot.

Soil: Kale prefers a sandy loam to light clay soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7.0. Fertilize and lime according to soil test.

Planting Depth: Plant seeds on a well-tilled seed-bed covering seed 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep.

Fertilization: Kales require less fertilization than other brassicas and will do well with moderate amounts of nitrogen, potassium, and potassium. Remember to watch for Nitrogen accumulation in the plant's leaves and stems.

Planting Kale For Livestock Forage

Brassicas such as kale are often used for supplemental or late season livestock forage crops. Forage brassicas, such as kale, are cold tolerant, fast-growing crops that have been used extensively as a forage resource for grazing livestock in Europe, Great Britain, New Zealand and locations in the United States. Interest in brassicas have increased in recent years as a forage resource with potential to extend fall grazing for 2-3 months in the United States.

Kale is planted almost exclusively for temporary pasture, although it may also be used for silage. It frequently is seeded alone for pasture, but mixing oats or annual ryegrass with kale will provide somewhat earlier grazing. Feed quality of kale is very good, and pasture will compare favorably with alfalfa.

Kale is also sometimes chopped and hand-fed in order to reduce waste associated with trampling by livestock. Waste can also be reduced if pastures are cross-fenced and the grazing period limited to a few hours each day.

Planting Dates: Kale grows well as a fall/winter forage in southern states. In Northern states it can be used as a summer, fall, and winter forage. Kale grows best in cooler weather with cold days and nights which will sweeten the leaves especially if subjected to a fall frost. The leaves will become bitter and tough if grown in warmer weather. Optimum soil temperatures for growing kale are 60°-65°.

Planting Rate For Pastures: Average seeding rate for Kale in a pasture is usually lower than that for food plot usage - - average is 3.5-4.0 lbs per acre.

Remember to watch for Nitrogen accumulation in the plant's leaves and stems which can cause nitrate poisoning.

Grazing Considerations For Brassicas In Livestock Pastures

Brassica crops can cause animal health disorders if not grazed properly. The main disorders are bloat, atypical pneumonia, nitrate poisoning, hemolytic anemia (mainly with kale), hypothydroidism, and polioencephalomalcia. The disorders can be avoided by the following two management practices:
  1. Introduce grazing animals to Brassica pastures slowly (over 3 to 4 days). Avoid abrupt changes from dry summer pastures to lush Brassica pastures. Don't turn hungry animals that are not adapted to brassicas into a Brassica pasture.
  2. Brassica crops should not constitute more than 75 percent of the animal's diet. Supplement with dry hay if continually grazing brassicas or allow grazing animals to access grass pastures while grazing brassicas.
Grazing can begin when the forage is about 12 inches tall (70 to 90 days after planting). The pasture should be grazed for a short time period and the livestock removed to allow the Brassica to re-grow. Rape may be grazed to a 10 inch stubble and 1 to 4 grazing periods may occur, depending on planting date and growing conditions. Turnips may be grazed to the ground the first time and the both tops and beets grazed in the second grazing. It is usually not necessary to dig the beets unless the soil is very hard.

The forage quality of Brassica is so high that it should be considered similar to concentrate feeds and precautions should be taken accordingly. Livestock should not be hungry when be put on pasture the first time so they do not gorge themselves. A lower quality hay should be made available to provide some fiber in the animals' diet.

Do not grow brassicas in the same field for more than two consecutive years as diseases will build up to reduce stand and yield.
