Dwarf Creeping Thyme Seed - Grow An Eco-Lawn or Groundcover
Thymus serpyllum ~~ Creeping thyme seed produces a perennial evergreen groundcover that emits a fragrant scent when walked upon and blooms during the spring and summer months.
Considered to be an Eco-Lawn, creeping thyme is one of the best low growing groundcovers due to it's low maintenance needs and ability to handle the foot traffic
of a grass lawn. This variety of creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) is not to be confused with other taller varieties
(T. vulgaris) which do not tolerate foot traffic.
The dwarf variety of
Thymus serpyllum reaches a height of 4 to 6 inches.Click on the image of Creeping Thyme for a larger view.
Uses For Creeping Thyme
Alternative to traditional lawn grass as an Eco-Lawn. Also used as borders and between pavers in landscaping.
Creeping Thyme is used in food as a seasoning and as a herbal tea.
Creeping Thyme has many medicinal properties.
A nectar source for honey bees, other pollinators and the large blue butterfly (native to Europe) which feeds exclusively on wild thyme and the herb marjoram.
Adaptation Of Creeping Thyme
Creeping thyme will grow most anywhere and is cold hardy in zones 5 to 9 of the USDA Hardiness Map.
It prefers a dryer climate and may not grow well in the tropical, humid regions of the USA as too much humidity may cause straggly growth and humidity induced rot.
This is not to say that you cannot grow creeping thyme in the hotter, humid areas of the US. You should grow it where there is excellent air circulation. If your thyme shows sign of
humidity damage you should remove the affected foliage then mulch with a layer of sand to reduce moisture near the plant. Creeping thyme will grow in the sandy well drained soils often found in the tropical regions of the US.
Please note that in hot drier areas Creeping Thyme is not as drought tolerant and may require more watering.
Planting, Maintaining & Growing Creeping Thyme
This perennial evergreen herb is easy to grow, maintain and will reach a height of 4 to 6 inches.
Planting Rate: 1/8 lb to 5,000 Sq. Ft.; Space plants around 24" apart.
Planting Depth: 1/4" - No deeper; Note some people just scatter the seed with good results. We recommend covering the seed slightly when possible.
Planting Date: Creeping Thyme is a perennial, so you can dormant seed in the late Fall (when SOIL temperatures are 50-55°) or seed in the Spring (after danger of frost in your
Sunlight Required: Grows in sun to light shade - will tolerate heavier shade but may become straggly and not bloom. Blooms in spring through September.
Water: After establishing, creeping thyme is drought tolerant.
Soil: Prefers a dry well draining soil with modest fertility.
Mowing: Due to low growth height, creeping thyme does not need mowing, although you may want to mow off dead blooms and to help the stems fill in. Set mower height just low
enough to take off dead blooms but not low enough to damage the stems. A preferred method would be to let nature take it's course rather than mowing.
Germination: Creeping Thyme germinates within 24 to 35 days.
Propagation: You may divide the established plants and re-plant during the early spring months after frost. Creeping Thyme will also reseed itself.
Fertilization: Organically - use fish fertilizer in late spring/early summer.
