Growing Roman Chamomile
Roman Chamomile Seed (Anthemis Nobilis or Chamaemelum nobile) can be planted as a fragrant and lovely lawn grass alternative, in a flower garden or meadow, and as an
addition to any herb garden. It is said that the Egyptians and the Roman's walked upon
this fragrant herb, bathed in it and used it
medicinally. Roman Chamomile is aggressive and can overtake an existing lawn and is said to be deer resistant. This flowering herb will attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
Grow in an open site in well-drained, preferably light, sandy soil in full sun. To produce a lawn, plant 5 to 6 inches apart, and water freely until established. Chamomile plants should be
mown -- after blooming -- periodically to encourage dense growth when using as a lawn substitute. See the picture here to the right showing Roman Chamomile with no blooms -- notice the
dense mat formed by the foliage which will overtake and eliminate weeds.
