- This spreader is not recommended for spreading fertilizers or seeds.

Note these restrictions for use with
salt:
Keep in mind
that all of the spreaders we sell are recommended for use with Ice melt
products, not salt. While they are often used with salt they are not commercial
salt spreaders, and thus certain guidelines must be observed for the salt spreading
to work. Salt tends to absorb moisture and will harden up. It should be immediately
applied if using these spreaders, and any remaining salt removed as soon as the job
is completed. Do not let the salt remain in the spreader for any
length of time or it may harden and become clumpy with possible spreader damage
a risk. Any clumps must be broken up before putting salt in the hopper.
These spreaders are not designed to break up clumps of hardened salt.
To avoid damaging the gearbox or motor, remove the cotter key agitator
inside the hopper before use. The material must flow freely for the spreader
to work. If sand is included it must be dry, moist sand will generally
not flow.
If there is
too much sand content in a mix, it may not flow correctly. Material
must be able flow through the small spreader hole in the bottom of the
hopper, much like sand does in a hour glass. Ice melt products stay
uniform and generally will flow without problem. Salt can cake up into lumps
or if left in the spreader can sit up and become stuck. This increases the risk of damaging
the spreaders gear box or electric motor when clumpy or set up material or
salt is used.
The
best option for good ice control is to use an ice melt product, or to follow
these strict guidelines.
