Southern and coastal regions. Sapphire St. Augustine also requires less fertilization and exhibits improved wear recovery with reduced weed problems.

Soil, Climate, And Fertility Requirements
Sapphire St
Augustine will grow in a wide variety of soil types and develops a deep root system that assists in it's drought tolerance. Proper watering is important as you want Sapphire to develop
this deep root system and that is determined by the
depth of watering that you do -- see watering below.
Sapphire will flourish in full sun and is also moderately shade tolerant -- requiring 3-4 hours of direct sunlight a day. Sapphire prefers the warmer climates of the Southern and
Coastal areas of the USA.
Fertility - Perform a soil analysis for best results. St. Augustine grows quite well with a starter fertilizer or organic compost added into the soil at the time of planting and
fertilization monthly until fully established. Newly planted grass needs more phosphorous than nitrogen to begin with. In fact it is recommended to take it easy on the Nitrogen when
growing St. Augustine grass.
Generally Sapphire requires 3-4 fertilizer applications/year - spring, summer and fall. Make routine observations and fertilize according to what the landscape indicates. Understand what
and how much fertilizer you are applying. Avoid disease and insect inducing growth flushes by reducing Nitrogen rates. Improve color and limit growth surges, especially in summer, by
utilizing Iron sources. Higher Nitrogen rates should only be applied in the spring, for injury recovery, or for planned “peaking” of Sapphire. Apply balanced, slow-release fertilizers with
lower rates of Nitrogen in the summer and fall. Recommended fertilizers are balanced, time release fertilizers, such as a 16-04-08, for most uses. Use products with more iron to improve
color. Consult with your local retailer, landscape professional or county extension office for specific recommendations.
Water - St. Augustine grass will not survive in dry inland areas without supplemental irrigation. As a general rule, Sapphire should receive 3/4 - 1" of water once a week from
irrigation or rainfall. Remember to water deep -- to a depth of 3 inches -- deeper watering makes for deeper roots. So water less and water deeply. Water requirements would also be
determined by your type of soil with heavier soils requiring less water than sandy soils. St Augustine will not grow in "boggy" or wet soils. Once it is fully developed in areas of
consistent rainfall it grows rather well on its own, but further inland and in drought conditions it will have to be watered and fertilized more to maintain a lush stand. St. Augustine
grass will not survive in dry inland areas without supplemental irrigation.
