Palmetto St Augustine Grass Plugs
Palmetto St Augustine Lawn Grass Plugs - In coastal regions, life is filled with sun, fun and salt air. While these elements can make for a great weekend, they are often too much for some grass varieties to take. With high heat, humidity and salt levels in the southeast and other coastal areas, it is often a challenge to produce lawns that are healthy, beautiful and resilient. Because of the abundance of large oak, willow and other shade trees, finding a grass variety that thrives in sun and tolerates moderate shade is yet another problem.
Palmetto St. Augustine grass is so versatile it overcomes these and other elements Mother Nature throws its way.

Soil, Climate, And Fertility Requirements
Palmetto St Augustine Grass performs well in full sun yet thrives in shaded areas where other grasses fail. Palmetto St. Augustine requires 3-4 hours of direct sunlight per day. It is cold
hardy to near 0° F, classifying it as one of the most cold-hardy St. Augustine varieties available. It is also frost tolerant and holds fall and winter color longer than Bermuda,
Centipede, or other St. Augustine cultivars. It will remain evergreen in some areas of the Deep South. Palmetto St. Augustine also has a massive root system, making it drought tolerant
once established. Palmetto St. Augustine recovers quickly from damage by wear or minor scalping as it sends out runners to repair open areas.
Fertility - Perform a soil analysis for best results.
St. Augustine grows quite well with a starter fertilizer or organic compost added into the soil at the time of planting and fertilization monthly until fully established.
Newly planted grass needs more phosphorous than nitrogen to begin with. In fact it is recommended to take it easy on the Nitrogen when growing St Augustine grass.
Generally Palmetto requires 3-4 fertilizer applications/year - spring, summer and fall. Make routine observations and fertilize according to what the landscape indicates. Understand
what and how much fertilizer you are applying.
Avoid disease and insect inducing growth flushes by reducing Nitrogen rates. Improve color and limit growth surges, especially
in summer, by utilizing Iron sources. Higher Nitrogen rates should only be applied in the spring, for injury recovery, or for planned “peaking” of Palmetto. Apply balanced, slow-release
fertilizers with lower rates of Nitrogen in the summer and fall. Recommended fertilizers are balanced, time release fertilizers, such as a 16-04-08, for most uses. Use products with more
iron to improve color. Consult with your local retailer, landscape professional or county extension office for specific recommendations.
Water -
St.
Augustine grass will not survive in dry inland areas without supplemental irrigation. As a general rule, Palmetto should receive 3/4 - 1" of water once a week from irrigation or rainfall.
Remember to water deep -- to a depth of 3 inches -- deeper watering makes for deeper roots. So water less and water deeply.
Water requirements would also be determined by your type of soil with heavier soils requiring less water than sandy soils. St Augustine will not grow in "boggy" or wet soils.
Once it is fully developed in areas of consistent rainfall it grows rather well on its own, but further inland and in drought conditions it will have to be watered and fertilized more to
maintain a lush stand. St. Augustine grass will not survive in dry inland areas without supplemental irrigation.
