Alamo Switchgrass Seed Facts

Alamo Switchgrass is the tallest of all Switchgrass varieties.  Alamo reaches heights of 8 to 10 feet at maturity.  This is a Texas release that produces heavy foliage and has late season maturity.   Great choice for wildlife habitat use.

Switchgrass has been called the grass of the future for it's versatility and environmental advantages. Alamo switchgrass establishment is best in the lowland (southern) areas of the USA, see our chart and map below. A native grass to North America, Switchgrass seed is used to produce a forage grass for livestock, make a beautiful ornamental grass, performs well for erosion control and switchgrass is being developed for use as a bio-fuel to name just a few of the uses for Switchgrass. Switchgrass has several ecological uses, which include prairie restoration, soil conservation, water quality improvement, and wildlife forage and habitat. It is also used in pastures and for hay crop production. All of these uses for Switchgrass are relative to it's growth stages, i.e. when used as a forage it should be grazed before flowering. There are several varieties of this warm season grass which we discuss below.

Features and Uses For Switchgrass

  • Ornamental Native Grass
  • Pasture Grass for Livestock Forage
  • Bio-fuel - Switchgrass can be used to produce Ethanol to replace fossil fuels
  • Erosion Control
  • Eco-friendly - Switchgrass requires little if any chemical Fertilization
  • Switchgrass captures carbon dioxide (greenhouse gases) naturally
  • Wildlife Habitat

Areas Of Adaptation For SwitchgrassUSA Map of Where Switchgrass Grows

Switchgrass is adapted to most of the USA and parts of Canada as shown in the USDA map here to the right. Switchgrass varieties can be divided into two types, lowland (southern) and upland (northern). Lowland varieties of Switchgrass perform well in areas where there is a longer growing season with warmer temperatures such as the Southern USA. Upland Switchgrass varieties are more cold tolerant and thus have higher winter survivability making them well suited for the Northern USA.

Soil, Climate and Fertility Requirements for Alamo Switchgrass

Alamo switchgrass is best adapted in areas where rainfall is 25 inches or more per year. In areas with less than 25 inches of annual precipitation, Alamo switchgrass seed can be planted and grown using irrigation or on naturally wet sites. Alamo Switchgrass is a lowland switchgrass variety and is not considered winter hardy north of I-70 in the central USA. Alamo Switchgrass grows well in fine to coarse textured soils, and in regions where annual precipitation 25 inches or more per year. Soil pH should be 5.0 or above. If soil tests results show medium or higher P2O5 and K2O, then no fertilizer is needed at planting. No nitrogen should be applied at planting. However, if a good weed-free stand is obtained by early August, then 30 to 40 lb of N/acre can be applied on fields where growth is slow and plants are a pale yellow color from nitrogen deficiency.

Establishment of Alamo Switchgrass

Alamo Switch Grass Growing AreasPlanting Rates will vary according to the intended use for Alamo Switchgrass. Alamo switch grass is best adapted to the areas in green in the map here to the right.

Planting Rates:

  • Planting With Wildflowers = 2 lbs./acre.
  • Planting alone = 8-10 lbs./acre.
  • For Biomass uses = with a density of greater than 2 plants per Sq. Ft. plant 10 lbs. per acre.
  • Planting Depth = 1/4 to 1/2 inch - No Deeper
  • Type = Warm Season Perennial
  • Botanical Name = Pancium virgatum 'Alamo'
  • Areas of Adaptation - Switchgrass is found and grows in all of the USA except the Pacific Northwest and California. Alamo switchgrass grows best in the lowland areas of the USA.
Avoid seeding at rates higher than the above listed recommendations when planting with wildflowers. There is 43,560 sq. ft. in an acre. Bulk pounds per acre are broadcast rates.

Please see Virginia Extension for information on managing Switchgrass as a forage crop and handling seed dormancy issues which are a characteristic of switchgrass seed.
