Axonopus compressus - Common Broadleaf Carpetgrass
Carpetgrass - Common Broadleaf Variety - is a perennial grass for wet areas where no other grass will grow. It grows well on sandy or loamy soils that are wet, have low fertility, and are moderately

- Carpetgrass seed produces a grass for wet areas in pastures or lawns
- Eliminates weeds and other grass with it's aggressive growth habit

- Looks similar to St. Augustine Grass but is a much lighter shade of green

- Causes no toxicity in horses or livestock when used in pastures for grazing
- Prolific seed producer with seed stalks that terminate with two branches similar to crabgrass
- During growth period of summer, Carpetgrass may have to be mowed every 5-7 days

Carpetgrass Areas Of Adaptation
Carpet grass (common) is adapted to the coastal gulf states, including Florida, Louisiana, Eastern Texas, Alabama, Southern Georgia, South Carolina and coastal Virginia.
Carpetgrass will grow in tropical and subtropical areas such as Hawaii and Puerto Rico also.
Planting Common Carpetgrass
Carpetgrass is a small seeded grass and requires a loose, smooth and firm seedbed. When planting in heavy soils you may have to drag and then roll your seedbed. If your grass seed is a mixture of carpetgrass and other grass seed then please follow the package directions for planting.
- Planting Rate - Lawns: 4 - 5 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. ; Pasture or Large Areas: 175 - 215 lbs. per acre
- Planting Dates - After the last expected frost in Spring - April to June are ideal.
- Over seeding an existing lawn - Plant 2 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. or 90 -110 lbs. per acre.
- Planting Depth - 1/4".
- Germination - Carpetgrass will germinate, if properly planted in the correct conditions, in 14 - 21 Days.
- Soil Types - Slightly acidic sandy soils or sandy loam soils that stay wet
Maintaining Common Carpetgrass
- Fertilization - While carpetgrass prefers low fertility, a complete fertilizer can be applied at 1 pound of N per 1000 square feet annually. Lime your soil if the pH is below
5.0. Fertilization of pastures is not necessary unless site requires it.
- Mowing Height - The recommended mowing height of carpetgrass is 1 to 2 inches. During the active growing season, the summer months, mow every 5 to 7 days with a rotary mower to
remove the unsightly seed heads
- Grazing Carpetgrass - Grazing should be rotated every 30 to 40 days with no more than 50% of the current year's growth grazed off. Proper grazing would leave a 2 - 3" stubble
height.
