Sericea Lespedeza Seed For Wildlife Food Plots

Lespedeza cuneata (Dumont) G. Don

Sericea Lespedeza Food PlotSericea Lespedeza Seed produces a warm season, perennial legume, shrub type plant that provides food and cover to wildlife when planted in food plots. Lespedeza is also planted for livestock pasture and hay production. Also known as Chinese Lespedeza, it provides food and cover for deer, quail, turkey and many other wildlife species. White-tailed deer will utilize sericea lespedeza in early growth stages and during drought, as well for thermal cover during hot days. It has an erect growth form, ranging from about 3 to 5 feet in height, and leaves that alternate along the stem. Each leaf is divided into three smaller leaflets, about to 1 inch long, which are narrowly oblong and pointed, with awl-shaped spines. Leaflets are covered with densely flattened hairs, giving a grayish-green or silvery appearance. Small creamy white to pale yellow flowers emerge either singly or in clusters of 2-4, from the axils of the upper and median leaves. The white flowers are composed of 1 to 3 pea-like flowers and appear from July to September. Clustered legume pods are scattered around the stem, contain one seed, and mature from October to March.

Sericea Lespedeza is considered to be an invasive species in some areas of the USA and is not legal for use in Kansas and Colorado. Please contact your Agricultural Extension Agent before planting this plant as it is considered to be an invasive species that must be managed properly.

Sericea Lespedeza Facts & Planting Info - Un-Hulled Seeds

Sericea Lespedeza is a warm season perennial legume that is native to South Asia, China and Korea. Here in the USA it is planted in wildlife food plots, livestock pastures, used in hay production and erosion control.

Areas of Adaptation For Sericea Lespedeza

Sericea Lespedeza has a wide range of adaptation in soil types of the Southeastern USA and Midwest. Prefers clay or loamy soil. Tolerates low fertility and acidic soils. This lespedeza shows good drought tolerance and an ability to form a dense stand on sterile, steep or eroded slopes.

Uses For Sericea Lespedeza

Wildlife food plots for deer and upland game birds, hay production, livestock pasture, erosion control. Provides food and cover for deer, birds and other wildlife. When used for pasture and hay production sericea lespedeza is generally planted with companion grasses.

Nutritional Value of Sericea Lespedeza & Grazing

Sericea Lespedeza has good nutritional value for grazing animals such as deer and cattle when the plant is young, but nutrition declines in late summer as it matures due to the higher tannin levels present in plants. Although seeds are excellent fall and winter food for quail and turkey.
Grazing: Begin grazing or harvest when plants are 15 to 24 tall. Leave 4 stubble height. High tannin levels reduce consumption as a pasture. Tannin levels drop if harvested for hay. Sericea Lespedeza has coarser stems compared to the pasture cultivar Serala Sericea Lespedeza, making it lower in quality as a pasture plant.

Planting Sericea Lespedeza Seed

Sericea Lespedeza is considered to be an invasive species in some areas of the USA and is not legal for use in Kansas and Colorado. Please contact your Agricultural Extension Agent before planting this plant as it is considered to be an invasive species that must be managed properly.

Rate: 30 lb./acre or 1 lb./1000 sq. ft. broadcast
Dates: March - May; Un-hulled seed can be planted in autumn with germination occurring throughout the warmer months the following year.
Method: Seed in prepared seed bed 1/2 deep
Fertilization: Lespedeza is a legume and produces it's own nitrogen. It cannot withstand much fertilization and should not be planted with crops needing high N content. If necessary 200 lbs. of 10-10-10 fertilizer may be applied at plant establishment - no specific time requirement.
Inoculation:  Though inoculation is less critical with sericea than it is with other legumes, the seed should be inoculated just before planting with fresh lespedeza inoculant.
