Alfalfa Seed For Food Plots

Medicago sativa

Alfalfa Food Plot SeedAlfalfa seed produces a food plot plant that is full of protein and other nutrients that make it one of the best deer forages you can plant. The nutrients in alfalfa help deer grow body mass and bigger antlers. Alfalfa in a food plot is guaranteed to attract deer, turkey and quail. Alfalfa food plots also provide a habitat for turkey and quail as they will use the large leaves for cover and feed on insects that are attracted to the food plot.

Alfalfa has a tap root that can extend to a depth of over five feet making a drought tolerant food plot plant. Alfalfa is a cool season perennial that will live for up to six years if properly managed. Good food plot management of Alfalfa will create more forage per acre than any other legume. After 50% bloom alfalfa should be mowed off or cut and baled into hay and removed from food plot area to allow new tender Alfalfa plants room to grow.

Seedland is proud to offer the quality Alfalfa seeds for food plots below.

Planting Alfalfa Seed In Food Plots

Alfalfa food plots are loved by Whitetail Deer as they are highly nutritious and are an easily digested forage. Alfalfa is a cool season perennial legume that is a favorite summer long forage for deer and turkeys. Alfalfa is high in protein and produces tons of high quality forage for wildlife. These plantings also attract beneficial insects for upland game birds and turkeys. Alfalfa is also an excellent companion crop for clover and grasses. It grows 24 to 36 inches tall and can last up to six years if properly managed.

In addition to the development of traffic tolerant Alfalfa, farmers and wildlife managers are finding that Alfalfa will save them money. Another benefit of Alfalfa is it a great is a nitrogen fixer for soil. This saves money on expensive chemical fertilizers, is great for the environment and the animals that consume or graze Alfalfa. Alfalfa is a win win pasture and food plot crop as it is also very nutritious saving money on expensive livestock feed. When planted in food plots with grass Alfalfa will provide important nutrients while adding nitrogen to the soil.

Planting Alfalfa Seed & Maintaining Crops

Preparation: Soil testing and fully prepared seedbed with amendments if necessary.

Seeding: The amount of seed required depend upon the soil density and climatic conditions and intended method of seeding. Please see the products above for variety planting rates. Rates are generally 15-25 lbs per acre.

Watering: Irrigation is a must in some areas if seasonal rains are not sufficient. Not as critical in the Southeast where rainfall amounts are higher.

Establishment: Early spring, late summer or fall depending upon the location, on a weed free and well prepared seedbed the and with adequate water the establishment time is generally about 60 days for the first harvest. Plant Alfalfa after or before the danger of frost.

Weeding: This should be done before seeding and following the method as suggested by your county agent.

Fertilization: Alfalfa is a legume and dependent upon the usage and since it is grown in so many different areas; soil tests are the only reliable method of determining what levels of nutrients are needed. Alfalfa is a soil re-builder in that it replenishes nitrogen into the soil naturally.

Popular Alfalfa Seed Varieties: Bulldog Brand Georgia 505 Alfalfa Seed, Ameristand 802 Brand Alfalfa Seed, Ameristand 403T Brand Alfalfa Seed. Different Fall Dormancy Ratings of Alfalfa determine the best variety for planting locations in USA.
