Trophy Radish™ For Deer Food Plots
From Rackmaster

Raphanus sativus

Trophy Radish Food PlotRackmaster Trophy Radishes are a little known member of the brassica family that show great promise when planted in deer food plots.
Simply put deer love them! Although Trophy radishes are in the Daikon family of radishes, they are not your average or common Daikon radish. Trophy radishes have a bigger, longer straighter single root and a taller leafier top than the average daikon radish. This is obviously beneficial to deer and deer managers because deer will eat all of this radish right down to the root!

Trophy Radishes were bred and tested for over 9 years at the University of Maryland by Dr. Ray Weil. The goal was to develop the best possible forage and tillage radish available. In the development process it was discovered that deer love Trophy Radishes and that these deer were grazing them heavily. Trophy Radishes are a member of the Brassica plant family which is a plant group that is very popular with deer in fall/winter food plots. Trophy Radishes are forage radishes and are very appealing to deer when planted in food plots. Normally Brassicas are more appealing after a freeze as the forages or greens become sweeter. Deer have been observed going for the Trophy Radishes before a freeze and digging through the snow later in the season for....the Trophy Radish roots!

Rackmaster Trophy™ Radish Facts - Better Deer Better Soil

Rackmaster Trophy Radishes are good planted alone or as part of a food plot "mix" which would include clovers and small grains. This mix of crops is beneficial as radishes need nitrogen for good growth and some of the nitrogen requirements may be met by the clover. Also after the radishes fade in the winter, you will be left with a stand of clover and small grains on an improved seed bed. The radishes grow fast so that they smother weeds and their extensive root system will break up the soil. Add the benefit of soil rebuilding from growing the Trophy Radish caused by the radishes dying off in the winter and rapidly decomposing residues that enrich the soil. They add organic matter high in nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, calcium, and boron which will benefit a companion or follow-up crop.

Note: Do not plant Trophy Radishes on the same plots for more than 2 years because of possible disease build up in the soil. So give your plot a 2 year rest from any type of brassica.

Planting Rackmaster Trophy Radishes

Fall planting: Aug. 15 - Nov. 1 - ideal planting to occur about 30 days before 1st frost. Plant anywhere 30 days before 1st frost.
Planting Depth: 1/4 to 1/2 drill or broadcast good seed to soil contact is important
Planting Rate: 10 lbs./1 acre or 5 lbs./1 acre if used in a mixture
Planting Method: Prepare a smooth, firm seedbed by plowing and dragging the soil. This will remove all vegetation and debris from the site, thus eliminating competition. Fertilizer and lime can be applied during this step so it can be worked into the soil. Broadcast the seed at the recommended rate evenly across the area and use a light drag or cultipacker to cover the seed. Making good seed/soil contact is the key to establishing a productive food plot.
Soil Test: Apply lime according to soil test recommendations to maintain a 6.0 to 7.0 pH.
Fertility: Apply 200 lbs. of a balanced fertilizer at planting and again at mid season to increase its attractiveness and growth potential.
