Cynodon dactylon
Type: Warm Season Perennial Grass
Origin: Southeast Africa
Adaptations: Wide range of soil types from sandy to clay soils. Best adapted to the lower 1/3 of the US on well-drained sites. Very drought tolerant, yet can withstand flooding for short periods.
Uses: Pasture, hay, erosion control.
Benefits: Easy to establish and maintain. Requires less fertilizer compared to Hybrid Bermudas, and establishes from seed. More economical to plant compared to sprigged Bermudas.
Nutrition: Average analysis - 10% protein and 50% TDN
Planting:
• Rate: 10 lb./acre or 1/2 lb./1000 sq. ft. hulled seed
•Time March - July
• Method: Well-prepared, firm seed bed 1/8 inch deep
• Fertilize: Responds to high levels of Nitrogen fertilizer and lime at a pH below 5.5. A fall application of complete fertilizer six weeks prior to a killing frost will improve winter hardiness.
• Grazing: Harvest hay at 4 to 6 week intervals. Apply nitrogen after each cutting. If grazed, split apply nitrogen applications.
For Winter Forage: Passerel Annual Ryegrass, Wintergrazer 70 Rye, Georgia 5 Tall Fescue, Penngrazer Tall Fescue.
