White Dutch Clover Seed - For Pastures & Wildlife Food Plots

Trifolium repens L.

White Dutch Clover Seed produces a low growing perennial white clover that is most useful for pasture grazing and home lawns. Other uses for White Dutch clover include use as a ground cover, cover crop, wildlife food plots and for erosion control. This variety of clover is is not desirable for hay production due to it's low height as it usually matures at a height of 4 to 8 inches. White Dutch Clover has the same low growing habit as that of wild white clover and in fact will cross pollinate with wild clover and ladino clover.

Due to the nitrogen fixing capabilities of White Dutch Clover and it's low growth height it has gained popularity among home owners who will include White Dutch clover in their lawn seed mixtures. This is especially popular now due to the known environmental risks and expense of using chemical nitrogen fertilizers. Please see our Grass Alternatives section for more on White Dutch Clover lawns.

White Dutch Clover Use In Pastures

White Dutch Clover In Bloom - PastureWhite Dutch clover is a low growing perennial legume that provides a nutritious, soil building pasture grass for grazing animals. White Dutch Clover seed is almost exclusively planted in pasture grass mixtures. When White Dutch Clover is used in pasture grass seed mixtures, the grasses are stimulated by the nitrogen released, thereby improving yield and protein content of the forages in pastures and wildlife food plots.

White Dutch clover is considered to be a small clover that originated in Holland, was brought to America by the early colonists and now is considered a native type clover due to it's prolific growth and adaptation to large areas of the USA.

Planting Dutch White Clover

Planting Dates: Early Spring or Late Summer
Planting Rate: 4-8 lbs per acre
Planting Depth:1/4" - no deeper
Soil : White Dutch clover will grow best if planted in moist, well-drained soils. It also requires a neutral soil pH in order to reach its full growth potential. White Dutch is more tolerant of poor soils than other white clovers and will survive on slightly acidic, sandy soils.
Fertility:  Do not apply nitrogen to pastures containing White Clovers. The two most important soil fertility factors in growing white clover are pH and phosphorus. A soil test is recommended for determining nutrients needed.
Inoculants: Clover, as with other legumes, should be inoculated for proper nitrogen processing. Inoculants are cultures of nitrogen fixing nodule bacteria in a peat based medium. Be sure and purchase an inoculant if your legume seeds are not pre-inoculated.

The small, yellow seeds of Dutch White Clover have a hard seed coat that permits germination many years after the initial seeding. The hard seed of white clover may pass intact through the digestive tract of grazing animals, thus allowing reseeding and spread of the species.

One of the most important factors in successful establishment of White Dutch Clover is controlling competition from the grass after seeding. The best way to do this is by grazing the pasture until the clover is two to three inches tall and then removing the animals for three weeks or more. If grazing is not possible, the grass can be kept short by mowing.

White Dutch Clover in Commercial or Home Lawns

White Dutch Clover seed may be mixed with lawn grass seed to provide a fast growing aid in establishing a new lawn that will provide up to 1/3 of the nitrogen a lawn will need. For use as an alternative lawn White Dutch Clover seed may also be planted alone. Just like traditional lawn grass, it can be mown (if desired), walked upon and provides a ground cover that re-seeds itself. For more information on White Dutch Clover lawns please see our Grass Alternative section.

Clover Forage Issues For Cattle & Horses

Livestock and horses only consume leaves, petioles and flower shoots of white clovers, but over consumption can cause bloating in cattle. Horses benefit from grazing white clover but they also may experience health issues if the clover is moldy due to high humidity conditions. For more on using clovers in pastures please see our informational website
