BUTTERFLY MILKWEED Asclepias tuberosa Description: perennial, 24-36 inches tall; has deep, tuberous roots; lacks milky juice; dried roots have been used for medicinal purposes. Flowers are in large clusters, orange to reddish; Blooms in zone 5 from mid-June to mid-July. Flowers produce large quantities of nectar which attracts butterflies. May be POISONOUS to livestock. - Culture/uses: full sun, well-drained sandy or gravelly soils; will endure drought well; adaptable to soils of 4.5-6.5 pH; very dependable, long-lived perennial once established. Tolerant to combination of heat and humidity. Zones 3-10.
